In a new Commercial Carrier Journal article, Kelly Martinez, founder and co-president of ePost Global, shared insights from the company’s latest 2025 Shipping Optimization Analysis – revealing that high-value cross-border shipments are increasingly at risk due to customs complexity.

“The more a carrier can support or enable pre-clearance, accurate Harmonized System (HS) code usage, and documentation visibility, the more valuable they become to shippers navigating today’s regulatory landscape,” Martinez said.

She also emphasized a growing opportunity for carriers offering consolidation services, especially as e-commerce drives demand for low-value, high-frequency shipments: “Carriers that can plug into these strategies or offer them outright are well-positioned to grow alongside this trend.

The report analyzed over 15 million international shipments in 2024 and found that 42% of total shipment value now falls under highly complex customs categories like electronics and luxury goods – reinforcing the need for more tech-enabled, compliant, and cost-efficient shipping strategies.
