Three operational changes that actually move the needle on sustainability

Logistics sustainability operations are where the biggest environmental gains in e-commerce shipping actually happen, not in packaging redesigns or carbon offsets. That's the core argument from Deb Deakin, Director of Process Improvement at ePost Global, in a recent analyst insight for Supply Chain Brain.

Deakin outlines three operational changes that deliver measurable reductions in both emissions and cost:

1. Shipment consolidation. Holding orders until all items can ship together, rather than sending each item the moment it's available, reduces packaging waste and cuts the number of vehicles on the road. Delaying delivery by just one or two days can reduce emissions by as much as 36%, while also decreasing the handling touchpoints that lead to damage, loss, and delay. Retailers who give customers the choice to consolidate have found strong acceptance and improved brand perception over the assumption that everyone prioritizes speed.

2. Multi-carrier network design. Single-carrier dependency forces costly defaults, such as routing a cross-border shipment via expedited air, because no ground option exists for that lane. A broader carrier network gives brands the flexibility to match the right carrier to each route, unlock better pricing through competition, and pivot quickly when one carrier slows down without the customer noticing.

3. AI-driven routing. Advanced analytics can simultaneously evaluate delivery timelines, costs, and carbon output, surfacing the most efficient path through the network and reducing unnecessary handoffs. Over time, small routing improvements compound into measurable reductions in fuel consumption and emissions.

Effective logistics sustainability operations don't require waiting on climate policy or consumer pressure to justify the investment. The economic case is already there: dense shipments cost less to move, optimized routes burn less fuel, and consolidated orders reduce waste while improving the customer experience.
