PARCEL published a byline from Helaine Rich, Vice President of Strategic Sales and Administration at ePost Global, exploring how the United States Postal Service could transform itself into a true competitor alongside UPS and FedEx.
Rich wrote that while USPS handles more packages than either competitor and serves every U.S. address six days a week, it faces a perception problem:
“Businesses and consumers don’t think of USPS when they need fast, tracked, controllable shipping.” She outlined strategies for overcoming this, from marketing its exclusive access to residential mailboxes to expanding Sunday delivery, improving package tracking visibility, and enhancing customer support.
Rich also addressed opportunities in rural delivery optimization, international shipping competitiveness, and leveraging USPS’ expansive retail footprint to offer greater convenience to shippers. She emphasized that the path forward lies in building services around USPS’ unique advantages rather than simply mimicking UPS and FedEx:
“The transformation would offer more options, better service, and genuine competition for shippers in markets currently dominated by private carriers.”
