In a recent Supply Chain Dive article, Alison Layfield, Vice President of Product Development at ePost Global, weighed in on the latest tactic shift by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), which has escalated labor uncertainty at Canada Post just as peak season approaches.
Following stalled contract negotiations, CUPW has lifted its months-long overtime ban –- but is now halting delivery of unaddressed direct mail, which experts say could have a sharper financial impact on the postal system and introduce more unpredictability for Canadian businesses.
Layfield explained that the new tactic raises the stakes:
“It may push the Corporation to take legal action due to the ‘refusal to work,’ and force Canada Post to issue a lockout – or maybe the union decides to push a little harder yet and begin rotating strikes or a full work stoppage.”
She noted that the current tactic could be just the beginning of a broader escalation, with increased risk of rotating strikes or a shutdown looming. These developments come as Canada Post continues to suffer heavy volume losses and deep financial strain.
