In a recent Bloomberg Businessweek Daily article, Alison Layfield, Vice President of Product Development at ePost Global, commented on the industry fallout from the Trump administration’s decision to eliminate the de minimis exemption for low-value imports.
Layfield warned of severe challenges for the U.S. Postal Service and Customs and Border Protection in processing duty collection for millions of small parcels:
“There’s going to be some sort of breakdown,” she said, pointing to a “potential bottleneck nightmare” as USPS and CBP struggle to handle the added paperwork and duties previously exempt under the $800 threshold.
Her remarks underscore mounting concerns that shippers, carriers, and consumers alike could see major disruptions as the rule takes effect on August 29.
