As the holiday season nears and e-commerce shipments to the U.S. continue to surge, there is growing scrutiny around de minimis thresholds—the regulation that allows tariff-free imports for shipments valued under $800. While this policy has benefited online retailers, it has raised concerns about illicit goods bypassing customs oversight and creating unfair competition for U.S. businesses.
In a recent Air Cargo Next Q&A featuring Alison Layfield, ePost Global’s Director of Product Development, Editor Courtney Blackann asks how the U.S. is considering changes to these regulations, following the lead of countries like Canada and the EU, which have tightened oversight to ensure fair competition for domestic businesses.
“Countries are focusing on making sure all goods—big or small—are taxed appropriately to ensure fairness in the marketplace,” Layfield explains. However, she also warns of the potential ripple effects – ranging from higher costs for consumers to supply chain disruptions.
