As e-commerce businesses expand into the European Union, evolving shipping regulations present both challenges and opportunities. In a recent Global Trade Magazine article, Alison Layfield, Director of Product Development at ePost Global, breaks down key regulatory shifts that impact cross-border logistics.

She highlights the impact of recent regulatory shifts, including VAT changes and new customs requirements: “The requirement for Harmonized System (HS) tariff codes and Advance Electronic Data (AED) on all imports stands as a testament to the EU’s commitment to enhanced security and efficiency.” She adds, “Perhaps one of the most significant shifts came on July 1, 2021, when the EU mandated that all imported goods be subject to Value Added Tax (VAT).”

Layfield emphasizes that while these changes create hurdles, compliance brings strategic advantages.

“Compliant shipping translates to improved speed and efficiency in cross-border transactions. It prevents costly delays, helps avoid fines and penalties, and ultimately enhances customer satisfaction through smooth delivery services.”
